Drive safely and legally with a trailer!

No, it’s not easy to know what’s legal and what’s not. But we make it easy for you to find out.

“Regular” class B license allows you to drive with a trailer, but only in certain situations.

How heavy can the load be? How fast can you drive? And do you really need a BE driver’s license?

  • Check out the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's Trailer Calculator, which shows you what you are allowed to do based on your car, trailer and driver's license class. You enter the car's registration number, the trailer's number and your own driver's license class. You will then get an answer as to whether you can drive this particular trailer or not.
  • To be able to drive a car with a trailer, the car must be approved to tow a trailer and you must have a class B driver's license. How much total weight you are allowed to tow depends on whether you have a driving license class B, B96 or BE.
  • Check the vehicle registration document for electric vehicles particularly carefully, as these have large variations in terms of trailer weight.
  • If you're going to hire a trailer, you should of course check that you're allowed to drive it. If not, you could end up with a hefty fine.
  • Also check tires, lights, brakes and other things that require maintenance before driving. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration often conducts roadside inspections where trailers are stopped and checked.
  • In Norway, class BE also applies to tractors and power tools, with or without a trailer, with a maximum permitted total weight of up to 25,000 kg, and where the vehicle cannot drive faster than 40 km/h.

Practical test:

Class BE: ordinary run-up.

Class B code 96: no run-up.

Pass guarantee: Centrum Trafikkskole gives you a pass guarantee on your BE driving license.

  • The Norwegian Public Roads Administration does not require a theory test.
  • Some students have a lack of experience or skills that require more driving lessons than just the mandatory lessons. This will then come in addition.
Full course overview

The training for class BE or B96 takes place in collaboration with a professional driving instructor with us. You and the instructor work together to find a good and flexible solution for you.

The training for both B96 and BE is divided into 4 steps with a total of 7 compulsory hours.

The basic package includes:

  • 2 step assessments (mandatory)
  • Load securing course
  • Safety courses on the road
  • Car and trailer rental for the driving test

Added:

  • Fee Statens Vegvesen for driving test NOK 1120, (paid online the day before).
  • Issuance of driver’s license NOK 90 + photo NOK 70.

Pass guarantee

In the unlikely event that you do not pass your driving test, we guarantee that you will be able to rent a car and trailer from us free of charge at your next driving test. Please note that any additional driving hours and fees to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration will be added.

Class B

With a class B driver’s license, you can tow a trailer with a maximum permitted total weight of 750 kg. If the car’s permitted total weight is 3,500 kg, the trailer combination’s (car + trailer) permitted total weight can be up to 4,250 kg.

Driver's license class B96

With this course, you can tow a trailer with a permissible total weight of more than 750 kg if the sum of the trailer’s + car’s permissible total weight is a maximum of 4,250 kg. With this course, you can convert to a BE certificate at any time by completing a practical test.

Driver's license class BE

With this course, you can tow a trailer with a maximum permitted total weight of 3,500 kg. In other words, you can tow a trailer with a maximum permitted total weight for car + trailer of 7,000 kg.

From 19.01.13, the total weight of the trailer may not exceed 3,500 kg.
